Conception of Education

At ThinQ, we see the function of education as capacity building, along various dimensions: physical, emotional, intellectual, aesthetic, societal, and ethical/moral. And we view the ultimate purpose of education as the well-being of the individual, society, humanity, and the planet itself, with all its creatures.

ThinQ focuses on the intellectual component, and is committed to a fitness program for the mind, beginning with inquiry abilities and experiential understanding in Class 1, and ending with research capabilities and trans-disciplinary understanding in graduate school. We do recognize that for education to be truly rich and wholesome, ThinQ’s expertise needs to be integrated with the physical, emotional, social, ethical, and aesthetic dimensions.

ThinQ seeks to help learners develop the mental capacities, predispositions, attitudes, and habits of mind that are characteristic of rational inquiry, which would stand them in good stead throughout their personal, professional, and public lives.

We would like to help the learner develop the ability to think like a mathematician, a scientist, a philosopher, a historian, an ethicist, and so on. For this, the learning activities in the program come from disciplines as varied as math, physics, biology, neuro-psychology, linguistics, forensics, history, ethics, and philosophy. Learners acquire knowledge and a breadth of perspective as by-products of inquiry. This allows them to make meaningful connections across disciplines.

ThinQ is unique in its requirement that its syllabi be oriented to the following 3 pillars:

Deep Understanding

An understanding of concepts, propositions, and questions combined with critical understanding of the evidence and arguments for conclusions

Inquiry

Concepts of inquiry, as well as the mental capacities and mindsets required for inquiry

Integration

Concepts and abilities that foster an integrated perspective, and ways of thinking and inquiring that transcend disciplinary boundaries
